Orthotics North london

What exactly is an orthotic?

An orthotic is a specialised insert for the shoe, used to alter or modify foot function. They are
designed to treat, adjust, and support various mechanical foot disorders and are manufactured to measurements and angles of an individual foot and leg.

Some orthotics are simple, commercially-made insoles for shoes that are sold over the counter in pharmacies. However the most effective orthotics are custom-made devices that are crafted to meet the specific needs of a particular individual. Custom orthotics are created using an impression of the foot called a cast, which duplicates any misalignments in foot structure. Using the cast and computer technology, technicians in an orthotic laboratory design a device that balances out deformities and corrects misalignments.

Why do I need an orthotic?

  • To alleviate foot pain
  • To allow the foot to function correctly. By maintaining the foot in the correct position, it can work more effectively.
  • Control/correct walking and stance abnormalities.
  • Relieve stresses on the ankles, legs and lower back.
  • Provide cushioning and stability - especially for athletes, those working on their feet and the elderly.

Functional orthotics control abnormal positions and movements of the foot. While standing or walking the heel and midfoot are held in a more stable position. This allows the foot to function more efficiently during weight-bearing and propulsion.

The posts on functional orthotics are wedges at the heel and midfoot, which hold those structures in a proper angular relationship to each other and the leg. Functional posted orthotics should only be prescribed by a properly trained registered Podiatrist, after a thorough bio-mechanical examination has been conducted.

Common Concerns about Orthotics

Will orthotics correct my foot problem?

Orthotics will control the position and motion of your foot. This may prevent the development of pain and disability, and the development of additional deformity. Orthotics will not change the underlying structure of the adult foot. If they are not worn, abnormal function will immediately return. In a sense they are similar to glasses, if you remove them you can no longer see properly.

Will orthotics fit in all my shoes?

Some shoes will not fit properly with an orthotic inside. These are usually dressy shoes with a shallow heel counter (i.e. the rear part of the shoe that wraps around the heel). Women have more fitting problems than men, due to fashion shoes and there are certain types of orthotics as custom made but it is possible find dress shoes that can accommodate orthotics. We are happy to discuss with you your foowear and orthotic requirements.

Will I feel immediate comfort in my feet when I wear orthotics or do they take time to get used to?

Some people develop slight discomfort in the foot, leg, or lower back when they first start to wear orthotics. This is normal and is due to a realignment of the lower limb and pelvis. Muscles and ligaments have to readjust to this new alignment and some patients experience intermittent aches and pains which typically disappear after two or three weeks.
